Curtiss F9C-2 Sparrowhawk at the Udvar-Hazy Center NASM Annex at Washington Dulles Airport

Sparrowhawk Model cutaway of hanger front Model cutaway of hanger back ZRS-4 Akron

This remarkable aircraft is one of a complement of five aircraft carried on board both the Akron and Macon in the early to mid thirties. The US Navy operated two Goodyear Zeppelins, each equipped with an internal hanger holding up to five Sparrowhawks. The aircraft were lowered from the hanger by a trapeze and could be launched and recovered in flight. The squadron insignia on the side of the aircraft is quite appropriate!
