This was our third attempt at going to Scotland, and we finally made it! Planning began over two years ago with the approach of Mom’s 75th birthday. When I asked if there was anything she would like to mark this important anniversary, she replied that she’d like to do something about getting my father’s ashes off the closet shelf! One of his wishes had been for his ashes to be spread in Idaho, Scotland or at Cold River Camp in New Hampshire. In 2006, two years after his death, we spread some of my father’s ashes on South Baldface, the mountain overlooking Cold River Camp. Mom’s birthday request reminded me that we still had work to do! We were not able to organize a trip to Scotland in time to celebrate Mom’s 75th birthday. Instead we decided to plan the trip for the following year, 2010. A volcanic eruption in Iceland three days before our scheduled departure scuttled our plans, along with those of millions of others. So we went to Orlando for a week instead. Plans were again made, this time for April vacation 2011. Guess what, we made it this time!
