Mount Cook

Mount Cook hike

The drive from Fairlie to Mount Cook was long, but featured spectacular views. Unfortunately, most of the mountain peaks were shrouded in clouds and we had serious doubts about whether we would get to see the summit of Mount Cook. After stopping for a picnic at the Hermitage lodge we decided to hike the mile or so up to Kea point (above) in the hopes that Mount Cook would magically appear.

Mount Cook Clouds

Unfortunately, it did not. Although we got a nice view of some of the lower peaks, (below, The Footstool & Mt. Cadogan) the summit of Mount Cook never appeared. That didn't stop the kids form enjoying the look out point, however. (Above)

We eventually decided to walk back down to where we had parked the camper and continue on to a suspension bridge across the river coming down from the glaciers. (Below) On the way we paused to inspect a monument to those climbers who lost their lives climbing Mt. Cook. (Above)

Snack at Hermitage

Our efforts to see the summit having been frustrated all afternoon, we retreated to a snack bar below the hermitage for some hot cocoa before leaving the mountain. (Above) The waitress said she expected the summit to clear shortly, so we decided to wait. As the weather began to clear, we moved outside and the children passed the time playing games. (below)

Mount Cook

Finally! The clouds cleared enough for us to catch a glimpse of the peak. (Above) It had taken all day, but we finally saw Mt. Cook. It seemed appropriate to pose with the camper for a final picture before driving back to Fairlie. (below)
