Flight 843, a Lockheed L1011-1 departing JFK for SFO, made an emergency landing on Runway 13L at JFK just after take off. Every seat on board, including all jumpseats, were occupied. The Captain stated that he did not feel the airplane was in a condition to fly and placed the aircraft back on the runway. The aircraft came to a stop after departing the runway into the sand. Despite massive fire from the fuel tanks ruptured during the emrgency landing, and with half of the aircraft's emergency exits blocked by flames, the crew was able to evacuate the entire aircraft in less than 90 seconds without ANY fatalities. Note the fuel truck removing any remaining fuel from the right wing. I was a Flight Engineer on the L-1011 at the time, and took this photo several days later upon my return to JFK.
